Designs and Layouts of Persian Carpets
One reason of Persian carpet popularity in the world is charming, interesting and different designs. Carpet of each region in Iran has its own special design and you can distinguish the place of the woven carpet easily by noticing the design.
Designs and layouts of carpets have been made by abundant experience during many years. Some of them are old and traditional and others are initiatives of designers and painters of this technique. It wouldn’t be and exaggeration to say that there have been as many designs as the amount of carpet weavers.
Imitating the design of Iranian carpet by most of carpet exporters such as India, Pakistan, China, Egypt, Romania, Albania and … proves the beauty and popularity of Iranian designs through the world. India as on of the largest exporters of handmade carpet, currently uses more than 50 Iranian designs. In other word, most part of supplied carpets in the world include Iranian designs and layouts.
The most important designs include the designs of Qom, Isfahan, Nain, Tabriz, Kirman, Kashan, Yazd, Mashhad, Sarouq, Ardebil, Hamedan and Tehran. Carpet experts have estimated the amount of designs up to 2000 kinds.According to Iran Carpet Company, the designs of Persian carpet is divided into 19 main groups.
- Design and Layout of Monuments and Islamic Buildings
These designs have been inspired by buildings, tiles and also geometric and decorative shapes.
- Arabesque Design
Arabesque has many different designs and it is repeated in many carpets.
- Shah Abbasi Design
Shah Abbasi design is basically the same as the Arabesque design at the beginning of Safavid. This design is woven in Kirman, Kashan, Tabriz, Isfahan and Mashhad.
- Afshan Design
In Afshan design, all parts and shapesare normallyconnected. But the design is in such a way that flowers, leaves and branches are scattered through out the text without any connection.
- Adapted Design
Some of these designs are similar to local and native designs of border areas of Iran and occasionally is beyond the region and inspired by distant countries. But if you notice carefully it is understood that most of these designs have Iranian roots.
- Lineament
By lineament we mean a small part of a design is repeated throughout the carpet, both in terms of length and width.
- Bush Design
It is one of the common patterns in Iran. Bush design is Abstract of cypress tree.
- Tree Design
Despite the matter that in carpet design, the basis things are branches and leaves, but in Tree design an attempt has been made to preserve the resemblance to nature.
- Turkmen or Bukhara Design
The design of these carpets that is woven mentally and without any pattern.
- Hunting Design
It has the same features of tree design but in hunting design, wild animals which are hunting, has been engraved.
- Frame group
This design is made up of polygonal frames such as bergamot frame, Arabesque frame and so on.
- Vase Design
In vase design the shape of vases is seen in different sizes. Sometimes a big vase full of flowers cover the whole carpet and sometimes several vases surround the text symmetrically or in succession.
- Flower Design
It is a combination of Iranian original designs with natural flowers, specially roses. In this type of carpet light colors especially red are used.
- Tangled Fish Design
This design is of native and tribal design and thetexture of that as other geometric designs is mental and is made without any pattern. This design was woven in Birjand, one of the cities of Khorasan and gradually appeared in other carpet weaving cities.
- Altar Design
This design is inspired by the Imam’s place of praying.
- Moharamat Design
It is a kind of carpet designs in which some prats of a design is repeated across the carpet and the width of the carpet is divided into several rows in texture and each row is continued up to the end of the carpet with a specific color and design and it is striped drawn.
- Geometric Design
In this design different geometric shapes are used and normally The lines are angular and move in a circular and arcuate way.
- Tribal and Mental Weaving Design
This design has been one of the oldest and the most original design of carpet weaving in Iran. It does not follow a regular and codified design, but it is beautiful and pleasing.
- Integrated Design
In addition to the above which had special name and history, other designs were created by integrating two or several designs.
